Webinar: Patent Strategies for AI, Machine Learning and Big Data

In this webinar, Wael Nackasha and Matt Norwood will discuss strategies used to protect new artificial intelligence technologies using the patent system, in Canada, and abroad. In a first section, the webinar will address the relative roles of engineering expertise, access to data, and AI-related IP in establishing a competitive advantage in the market; it will also present a brief taxonomy of AI technologies and explore industry trends in AI and machine learning. In a second section, the webinar will outline specific patent drafting and filing strategies that you can use to secure meaningful and effective patents on a wide range of different types of innovations in the AI field, through the lens of the competitive and technological landscape outlined in the first section.

Topics will include:

Speakers:

Matthew Norwood, Partner

Matt Norwood is a Partner with Ridout & Maybee LLP’s Toronto office. Matt has a background in natural language processing, machine vision, and other AI technologies He has an M. Eng. in Computer Science and a B.S. in Brain Cognitive Science from MIT.

Wael Nackasha, Lawyer

7 is an Associate with Ridout & Maybee LLP’s Toronto office. Wael has a Ph.D. and an M.A.Sc. in Electrical and Computer Engineering and a B.Eng. in Electrical Engineering. He has several years of industrial experience as a research scientist and programmer. Wael’s expertise revolves around the areas of machine learning/AI and signal and image processing.

Matt and Wael both have extensive experience advising clients and drafting patents in the fields of AI, machine learning, big data, and industrial automation.
